Alec Donovan, a youth wrestling coach and former state champion who was the NCAA’s first openly gay college wrestler, was sentenced to seven years in prison on Thursday.
Donovan was found guilty of charges related to distributing images of child sexual abuse.
He was also accused of soliciting nude photographs from minors and would also allegedly send them nude images of himself.
U.S. District Judge Zahid Quraishi sentenced Donovan to 30 years of supervised release once his seven years in prison were served.
Donovan was once hailed by the media when he acknowledged that he was gay during college recruiting trips. He would eventually qualify for the NCAA Division III national wrestling tournament.
This is quite the fall from grace for Donovan and leaves a really bad taste in the mouths of those who promoted him for being the first openly gay collegiate wrestler.
