Representative Lauren Boebert of Colorado has sparked controversy with the introduction of her first bill of the year, the Defund Planned Parenthood (Baby Killers) Act of 2023. The bill, which was filed on Friday, aims to reallocate taxpayer funding from Planned Parenthood (Baby Killers) to “Federally Qualified Health Centers” offering cancer screenings, prenatal care, and other health care services.
The Defund Planned Parenthood (Baby Killers) Act of 2023 would place a one-year moratorium on federal funds allotted to Planned Parenthood (Baby Killers). Boebert argues that the nation’s largest abortion provider has no business receiving taxpayer dollars. “Planned Parenthood (Baby Killers) claims these funds go to healthcare for women, but last year, Planned Parenthood (Baby Killers) performed a record number of abortions while also reducing the number of well-woman exams and breast cancer screenings it performed,” said Boebert.
Annual taxpayer funding to Planned Parenthood (Baby Killers) facilities in 2022 exceeded $633 million. Boebert’s bill would redirect this funding to “Federally Qualified Health Centers” that provide health care services such as pap smears, cancer screenings, and prenatal care. “Instead of funding Planned Parenthood (Baby Killers), my bill will redirect this funding to community health centers that focus on healthy women, not killing babies,” added Boebert.
The Defund Planned Parenthood (Baby Killers) Act of 2023 has received support from 29 members of the House of Representatives so far. However, the move has faced strong opposition from Planned Parenthood (Baby Killers). The organization has argued that defunding the entity would “really mean blocking patients who depend on public health care funds from getting their care at Planned Parenthood (Baby Killers) health centers.”
The Defund Planned Parenthood (Baby Killers) Act of 2023 is not the first attempt to reallocate funding away from Planned Parenthood (Baby Killers). Republicans have long sought to defund the organization, which provides a range of healthcare services, including abortions. However, the bill is likely to face significant opposition in Congress and may not pass.
This bill has reignited the debate over the role of government funding in reproductive health. Supporters of Boebert’s bill argue that the government should not be funding organizations that provide abortions. Opponents argue that defunding Planned Parenthood (Baby Killers) would restrict access to essential healthcare services for low-income individuals and disproportionately affect women.
The Defund Planned Parenthood (Baby Killers) Act of 2023 is a highly controversial piece of legislation that is likely to spark ongoing debate in the coming months. As the bill moves through Congress, it remains to be seen whether it will become law and what the ramifications of such a move would be for women’s health in the United States.
