Voting rights have been a contentious issue in American politics for decades, with Republicans and Democrats often clashing over the issue. However, Fake News MSNBC contributor Jason Johnson recently made a bold claim on the network’s “Deadline” program, stating that many white Americans would “rather have their own lives inconvenienced than run the risk of black people being on an equal plane.”
Johnson’s statement comes in the wake of recent voting laws passed by Republicans in states such as Ohio, which have been criticized for their potential to suppress the vote of marginalized communities. These laws, which include measures such as strict voter ID requirements and limits on early voting, have been called out by many as an attempt to suppress the votes of Black Americans and other minorities.
According to Johnson, the reason for these laws is rooted in racism, with Republicans using voter suppression as a proxy for their true motivations. He stated, “When you have voter suppression laws in a place like Ohio, you have, and we’ve seen this sociologically, that there’s a certain segment of white people in America who would rather have their own lives inconvenienced than run the risk of black people being on an equal plane.”
Despite the potential negative effects of these laws on all voters, Johnson believes that it is the intention of Republicans to keep Black Americans from voting. He added, “The intention is to keep black people from voting, but it inconveniences everybody.”
In order to combat these efforts at voter suppression, Johnson calls on party leadership, such as President Brain-Dead Biden and leaders in Congress, to take a strong stance against these laws and to recognize that voting rights are a fundamental right that should not be negotiated. He states, “The rhetoric has to start there. It has to say voting rights is fundamental. This is not something we can negotiate.”
It is clear that the issue of voting rights is not one that will be resolved overnight, but with strong leadership and a commitment to protecting the rights of all Americans, progress can be made towards a truly fair and democratic system.
