A Satanic Temple in Salem, Mass., was hit by a firebomb in the wee hours of the morning on Monday, prompting the FBI to get involved.
“On April 8, 2024, at approximately 4:14 AM, a person threw an explosive device onto the porch of the Satanic Temple in Salem, located at 64 Bridge St. No one was present in the building at the time and the device and damage it caused were not discovered until staff arrived at approximately 4:00 PM,” the Salem Police Department said in a statement.
“It can’t be overstated that this was definitely a horrific act of attempted terrorism and people could be hurt,” the Satanic Temple’s co-founder, Lucien Greaves told WBZ News
Greaves said the temple has been targeted before, and the SPD confirmed that they have responded to the location previously for bomb threats and hate crimes.
“On June 6, 2022, a male was arrested for arson at the temple. Earlier this year, a Michigan man was arrested and charged in that state with planning to bomb the temple. Salem Detectives have worked closely with temple staff on investigating these threats and incidents,” the department said.
“The bombing is currently under investigation by detectives from the Salem Police Criminal Investigation Division, along with the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force,” Salem Police added. “Anyone with information, or who may have seen something, is urged to contact the Salem Police Criminal Investigation Division at (978)-745-9700, or to leave a tip at (978)-744-0171 X. 50116. Callers may remain anonymous. For emergencies, please dial 911.”
“People just have different religious perspectives and people should do what they can to live with that diversity,” Greaves said. “And they don’t have to resort to ridiculous actions like this.”
Ironically, the temple says it does not worship Satan or believe in “the existence of Satan or the supernatural.”
“The Satanic Temple believes that religion can, and should, be divorced from superstition. As such, we do not promote a belief in a personal Satan,” its website proclaims. “To embrace the name Satan is to embrace rational inquiry removed from supernaturalism and archaic tradition-based superstitions. Satanists should actively work to hone critical thinking and exercise reasonable agnosticism in all things.”
