Peter Navarro, a former top aide to President Donald Trump, was ordered earlier this month to begin his prison sentence.
According to NBC News, on Friday, Navarro and his attorneys requested the U.S. Supreme Court intervene after his plea to a federal appeals court was rejected.
Navarro is set to report for his first day behind bars starting Tuesday, but now hoping that the high court steps in.
The former Trump aide faces prison time after he was charged with defying a congressional subpoena from the House Jan. 6 Committee. Navarro claimed immunity at the time, but the courts didn’t buy it.
What’s going on?
Last week, a three-judge panel in federal appeals court ruled that Navarro had “not shown that his appeal presents substantial questions of law or fact likely to result in reversal, a new trial, a sentence that does not include a term of imprisonment or a reduced sentence of imprisonment that is less than the amount of time already served plus the expected duration of the appeal process.”
Navarro’s last hope involves intervention from the Supreme Court, which may or may not happen.
NBC News noted:
In an emergency application filed with the Supreme Court late Friday, Navarro’s lawyers say his case marks “the first time in our nation’s history” that “a senior presidential advisor has been convicted of contempt of Congress after asserting executive privilege over a congressional subpoena.”
During a sentencing hearing, the judge was clearly not sold on Navarro’s claim that he was a victim of political persecution.
“You are not a victim,” U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta told Navarro at his sentencing. “You are not the object of a political prosecution — you aren’t. You have received every process you are due.”
Social media reacts
Many across social media hoped for the best for Navarro and his attempt to delay the prison sentence. In stark contrast, his critics had nothing nice to say and were more than happy for him to begin his prison sentence as soon as possible.
“I was about to type “Fat Chance” but this I remembered the group of Justices we have now, so I’m actually curious to see what they say. Anything other than an immediate denial would be a travesty,” one X user wrote.
Another X user wrote, “4 months for “Contempt Of Congress”… so is Hunter Biden going to federal Prison as well, or is this going to be another example of a two-tiered justice system.”
Only time will tell if Navarro receives the Supreme Court intervention he’s hoping for.
