Almost half of Americans said Washington should urge officials in Ukraine to settle and agree to a peace deal as soon as possible, according to a new survey.
About 47 percent of people in a recent Ipsos/Chicago Council poll said Washington should push for peace.
The findings come as the war between Ukraine and Russia approaches the year mark. The U.S. has given about $400 million in the most recent aid package to Ukraine to help fund the war.
Russia invaded its neighbor in February 2021. Many expected Moscow to take the country quickly, but that hasn’t been the case.
Now, Russian leaders are growing frustrated with the war as questions about President Vladimir Putin’s leadership continue.
Americans remain split with 26 percent saying Russia has the edge in the conflict, with the exact same percentage saying Ukraine has the upper hand.
The rest believe that neither country has the advantage, the poll found.
Americans continue to back supporting Ukraine with more than 65 percent supporting giving arms, economic aid, accepting refugees and sanctioning Russia.
About three in 10 people said the U.S. military should intervene on Ukraine’s behalf to end the war, the poll found. However, the same percentage said the U.S. should gradually withdraw support for Kyiv.
Interest in backing Ukraine seems to be waning with 48 percent saying America should support Ukraine for as long as it takes. That figure is down from 58 percent who said the same in a similar summer survey. The most recent survey also found 47 said Washington should push for peace, up from 38 percent who said the same in the summer survey.
