An Arizona grand jury has charged former President Donald Trump’s chief of staff Mark Meadows, lawyer Rudy Giuliani, and 16 others for actively attempting to use so-called fake electors in an effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

Democratic state Attorney General Kris Mayes said in a video released by her office, “I will not allow American democracy to be undermined. It’s too important.”
AP News reports that Wednesday’s released indictment names 11 Republicans who declared to Congress that Trump won Arizona in 2020. Each of them faces nine counts of conspiracy, fraud, and forgery.
The other seven names include top advisors to the former president.

Mayes, who has called the Arizona election “free and fair” in the past, said that the “plot to violate the law” carried out by these Republicans “must be answered for.”
The Attorney General’s unveiled indictment marked the conclusion of a 13-month investigation that she has largely sought to keep out of the public eye, per Arizona Republic.
The outlet also reported that the grand jury deliberations leading to its charging decision are largely confidential and are expected to remain so.
The Post Millennial revealed the full list of names which includes Kelli Ward; Tyler Bowyer; Nancy Cottle; Jacob Hoffman; Anthony Kern; James Lamon; Robert Montgomery; Samuel Moorhead; Lorraine Pellegrino; Gregory Safsten; Michael Ward; Mark Meadows; Rudy Giuliani; Jenna Ellis; John Eastman; Christina Bobb; Boris Epshteyn and Mike Roman.

Bowyer is notably an executive with Turning Point US. He is also a committeeman for the Republican National Committee.
Montgomery is the former chair of the Cochise County Republican Committee, Moorhead is a former leader of the Gila County Republican Party, Pellegrino is the secretary of the Arizona Trump electors, and Safsten is the former executive director of the Arizona Republican Party.
Kelli Ward is the former chair of the Arizona Republican Party, and her husband, Michael, is a GOP activist.
The indictment describes Trump as an unindicted co-conspirator, per AP. He contends that he cannot be prosecuted for actions taken while serving as president.
The Supreme Court will hear arguments on Thursday regarding Trump’s attempt to evade federal prosecution for his endeavors to overturn his defeat.

USA TODAY reports that Mayes has faced significant political pressure to pursue a case.
Comparable groups of electors in Michigan, Georgia, and Nevada have already faced charges for their involvement in the widespread campaign to maintain Trump in office.
A federal grand jury leveled charges against Trump last year, accusing him of conspiring with others to disenfranchise voters and undermine Biden’s victory.
Trump is also confronting charges in the Georgia case, which contends that he spearheaded a criminal enterprise, drawing on a state law typically reserved for prosecuting organized crime.
Some of the Arizona electors have previously argued that they were simply presenting Congress with a contingency plan, though there’s no evidence supporting this claim in the documents they submitted to Congress and the National Archives, per USA TODAY.
While similar groups of electors in other states included conditional language, none was present in Arizona, the outlet states.
