Former President Trump sued ABC News and George Stephanopoulos on Monday, alleging defamation over the anchor’s questioning of Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) about her endorsement of Trump.
The March 10 interview on “This Week” made headlines after Mace, a rape survivor, accused Stephanopoulos of trying to “shame” her by probing why she endorsed the former president despite juries’ recent verdicts against him in advice columnist E. Jean Carroll’s sexual battery and defamation lawsuits.
Trump’s lawsuit takes aim at how Stephanopoulos at multiple points in his questioning said Trump had been found “liable for rape.” The jury had found Trump liable for sexual abuse under New York law, but not rape.
Trump has slammed the jury’s verdict as a disgrace, and has denied all Carroll’s allegations.
During the interview with Mace, Stephanopoulos brazenly said, “Judges and two separate juries have found him liable for rape and for defaming the victim of that rape. How do you square your endorsement of Donald Trump with the testimony we just saw.”
In the 20-page complaint filed Monday, Trump’s attorney, Alejandro Brito, wrote:
“These statements were and remain false, and were made by Defendant Stephanopoulos with actual malice or with a reckless disregard for the truth given that Defendant Stephanopoulos knows that these statements are patently and demonstrably false.
“Indeed, the jury expressly found that Plaintiff did not commit rape and, as demonstrated below, Defendant George Stephanopoulos was aware of the jury’s finding in this regard yet still falsely stated otherwise.”
Below is the moment during the interview when Stephanopoulos made his false claim, and tried to shame Mace for endorsing Trump, as he drew comparisons to herself as a rape victim.
Mace fired back at the liberal host, saying, “Well, I will tell you, I was raped at the age of 16. Any rape victim will tell you, I’ve lived for 30 years with an incredible amount of shame for being raped. I didn’t come forward because of that judgment and shame that I felt. It’s a shame that you will never feel, George. And I’m not going to sit here on your show and be asked a question meant to shame me about another potential rape victim.”
Stephanopoulos again repeated his false claim, saying, “Donald Trump has been liable for rape by a jury. Donald Trump has been found liable for defaming the victim of that rape by a jury. It’s been affirmed by a judge.”
I was brought on to talk about 2024…instead Clinton crony turned fake journalist @Gstephanopoulos attacked me and tried to shame me as a rape victim.

Mace reacted to Trump’s lawsuit against ABC and Stephanopoulos, writing, “President Trump isn’t going to let the media get away with their lies. Good. President Trump always fights for the truth. All are now on notice.”

Breitbart’s Joel Pollack wrote Tuesday morning, “I said at the time Trump had a defamation case against @GStephanopoulos and @ABC over the false claim a jury found him liable for rape (in reality, NOT liable). That’s basically defamation “per se.” Now Trump has sued. He often does. This time he’s right.”
