While most Democrats are bent on destroying the careers and reputations of a number of U.S. Supreme Court Justices, which has resulted in death threats and other scary situations, President Joe Biden shocked everyone with his latest budget proposal.
According to Politico, Biden’s budget proposal for the Department of Justice contained “$38 million in new funding to address an increasing number of threats against federal judges, with some of that money to be devoted to guarding Supreme Court justices and their families.”
The proposal comes as liberal activist groups continue to incite protests and potential violent acts against some of the sitting conservative justices.
Some of those conservative justices and their families were the targets of prolonged protests in their private neighborhoods in the wake of the overturning of Roe v. Wade, causing many to wonder why the nation’s highest judicial appointees were not adequately protected.
What does he want?
The extra funds would be used to set up a special division within the U.S. Marshals Service called the Office of Protective Services.
The division would focus on protecting Supreme Court justices, their families, and other federal judges in the wake of increasing threats and dangers in the current politically charged environment.
Reporters were provided a fact sheet by the DOJ last week outlining what the new division would mean.
“It will develop a strong framework for fulfilling protective responsibilities for the Federal judiciary, including the Supreme Court of the United States, their families and other designated officials,” the sheet said.
Politico added:
Officials are seeking $28.1 million for the new office in the next fiscal year, to support staffing by 51 U.S. marshals and two aides. Some of the funds would be directed to “ongoing residential security for Supreme Court justices,” while other funds would add personnel in a command center the marshals operate to track those providing protection in the field and to monitor security cameras “at secured locations such as residences,” the fact sheet said.
The new division is expected to receive bipartisan support.
Relieving the Marshals
The U.S. Marshals were tasked with extra duty in 2022 after violent protests broke out at the homes of several conservative justices. The new proposal notes that the protection offered by the Marshals, as it stands, has become costly and affects the agency’s “core mission,” hence the need for a special division dedicated to such duties.
“This comes at great expense to the [Marshals Service], both in terms of financial cost and impact on its other core missions,” the court’s statement said.
“The Supreme Court Police and the USMS agree that this request represents an overall better and permanent solution to protecting the Justices compared with attempting to maintain the current USMS coverage indefinitely.”
Congress will need to approve the funding request.
