The U.S. Soccer Federation irked Iran ahead of their pivotal Group B match on Tuesday when it displayed the country’s national flag without the emblem of the Islamic Republic, saying the move supported protesters in Iran.
Iran’s government reacted by accusing America of removing the name of God from its national flag.
U.S. Soccer said in a statement Sunday morning it decided to forego the official flag on social media accounts to show “support for the women in Iran fighting for basic human rights.” The Twitter account of the U.S. men’s team displayed a banner for the squad’s matches in the group stage, with the Iranian flag only bearing its green, white and red colors. The same was seen in a post on its Facebook and Instagram accounts.
The normal flag was returned by Sunday afternoon on the Twitter banner and on the Facebook and Instagram posts.
The federation said, “We wanted to show our support for the women in Iran with our graphic for 24 hours.”
Walker Zimmerman, a defender for the U.S. said, “We didn’t know anything about the posts but we are supporters of women’s rights. We’re focused a lot on Tuesday, on the sporting side, as well…. I think it’s such a focused group on the task but at the same time we empathize and we are firm believers in women’s rights and support them.”
According to Iran’s ISNA news agency, Safiollah Fagahanpour, an adviser to the Iranian Football Federation commented, “They must be held responsible. Obviously they want to affect Iran’s performance against the US by doing this.”
Fake News CNN tweeted Sunday, “Iran calls for the US to be kicked out of the 2022 World Cup after the United States Soccer Federation changed Iran’s flag on its social media platforms to show support for protesters.”

Iran International English tweeted, “The official Twitter account of the US national football (soccer) team (@USMNT) has removed the Islamic Republic’s ‘Allah’ emblem and the ‘takbirs’ from Iran’s three-colored flag in a picture it has posted of their FIFA World Cup group’s standings ahead of Iran-US Tuesday match. Upon the Islamic Republic’s request, Qatari authorities have been preventing Iranian fans from carrying ‘Lion and Sun’ flag – which used to be Iran’s national flag before 1979 Islamic Revolution – or the three-colored flag with ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’ slogan.”
