The Trudeau Liberals intend to ban virtually all semi-automatic firearms through Bill C-21, the government revealed at Tuesday’s Public Safety and National Security committee.
“The Liberal government just pulled a fast one on Canadians and are trying to ban semi-automatic hunting rifles,” tweeted Conservative MP Glen Motz.
The committee members were discussing scores of pages of amendments to Bill C-21. Conservative MPs on the committee tried to get clarification about amendment “G4,” which appears to increase the number of gun owners whose firearms would become illegal if the legislation becomes law.
The proposed amendment to Bill C-21 includes a ban on:
“(a) firearms that is a rifle or shotgun, that is capable of discharging centre-fire ammunition in a semi-automatic manner and that is designed to accept a detachable cartridge magazine with a capacity greater than five cartridges of the type for which the firearms was originally designed.”
Conservative MP Raquel Dancho said the amendment would ban most semi-automatic rifles and shotguns.
“That is incredibly significant, Chair, and will impact hundreds of thousands of hunters. So we need to be clear about what that is, what we need to ask for is a complete list of the firearms, notably semi-automatic rifles and shotguns that will be impacted by G4,” she said.
Dancho asked the committee to consider waiting a day to discuss the amendment so members could gain clarity on what guns would be impacted.
