X owner Elon Musk declared “CNN is dying” this week during a social media spat with former host Don Lemon, fueling questions about whether the network’s years-long struggle to attract viewers means it’s on life support.
CNN has been plagued with a series of leadership changes, scandals, layoffs, and infighting to coincide with sagging viewership and numerous lineup adjustments. Musk’s harsh diagnosis came after he dropped his X partnership with Lemon, whose approach to his forthcoming show Musk says is “CNN, but on social media,” something he insists “doesn’t work.”
In 2023, CNN had its lowest-rated year of all time, going back more than three decades, across multiple categories. CNN averaged only 582,000 primetime viewers to finish No. 12 among cable networks, with a smaller audience than networks such as TLC, Hallmark and HGTV.
Wednesday night, Musk wrote: “ is welcome to monetize on this platform, just like everyone else. What we aren’t going to do is guarantee minimum payments to him, as he was demanding, which would be going beyond everyone else! Unfortunately, all wants to do is rehash the dying CNN business model “but on social media”, which will do even worse here than it did on cable TV.”

Musk added about Lemon: “His approach was basically just “CNN, but on social media”, which doesn’t work, as evidenced by the fact that CNN is dying.
“And, instead of it being the real Don Lemon, it was really just Jeff Zucker talking through Don, so lacked authenticity. All this said, Lemon/Zucker are of course welcome to build their viewership on this platform along with everyone else.”

XBusiness announced, “X is a platform that champions free speech, and we’re proud to provide an open environment for diverse voices and perspectives. The Don Lemon Show is welcome to publish its content on X, without censorship, as we believe in providing a platform for creators to scale their work and connect with new communities. However, like any enterprise, we reserve the right to make decisions about our business partnerships, and after careful consideration, X decided not to enter into a commercial partnership with the show.”

Lemon ran to his old network, who had previously fired him, to complain about Musk.
Julia, a citizen journalist, pointed out: “Lemon ultimately revealed his agenda: “Maybe we’re learning that a public square shouldn’t be privately owned by someone who doesn’t think that there should be any moderation on that platform.””
Don Lemon ran to CNN to pout and share clips of his interview with Elon Musk after Musk canceled his X show by text message.
