Last week saw a member of Brazil’s left-wing Supreme Court announce that Elon Musk is among the targets of a new investigation.
According to the Associated Press, that revelation came this past weekend from Saturday from Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
Justice slams Musk for “flagrant” behavior
The investigation concerns allegedly fake news with de Moraes accusing Musk of unleashing a “disinformation campaign” against Brazil’s highest judicial body.
“The flagrant conduct of obstruction of Brazilian justice, incitement of crime, the public threat of disobedience of court orders and future lack of cooperation from the platform are facts that disrespect the sovereignty of Brazil,” de Moraes said in an opinion released on Sunday.
The justice took issue with Musk having accused him of working to suppress free speech as well as subvert Brazil’s constitution.
What’s more, Musk has also advised Brazilian X users that they can continue to access his X platform via a virtual private network if it is blocked in their country.
Musk “lifting all restrictions” for Brazilian X users
“This aggressive censorship appears to violate the law [and] will of the people of Brazil,” the maverick billionaire wrote on Saturday.
“We are lifting all restrictions. This judge has applied massive fines, threatened to arrest our employees and cut off access to 𝕏 in Brazil,” he continued.

“As a result, we will probably lose all revenue in Brazil and have to shut down our office there,” Musk predicted before adding, “But principles matter more than profit.”
Critics have accused de Moraes of engaging in authoritarian behavior
The Associated Press noted in an article published last year that de Moraes is regarded as an authoritarian by critics, including conservative supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro.
One controversial move came in August of 2023 when the justice signed off on search warrants targeting multiple Brazilian business leaders.
The warrants were issued in the wake of media reports about a private group chat in which members voiced support for a coup.
