(RestoreAmericanGlory.com) – While Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) might have endorsed former President Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, it does not appear that their relationship has strengthened.
It has been noted that McConnell is still not talking to the former President despite the fact that his top deputies, including Senate GOP Whip John Thune (S.D.) and Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), have attempted to mend fences by directly reaching out to Trump. While the majority of the Republican conference has now expressed support for Trump, there are a few holdouts who are not as welcoming to the former President. These include McConnell as well as many of his Republican allies in the Senate, such as Sens. Bill Cassidy (La.), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), Mitt Romney (Utah), Susan Collins (Maine), and Todd Young (Ind.).
Out of those senators, four had voted for Trump to be convicted on the impeachment charge connected to the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol insurrection.
McConnell recently noted that he continued to stand by his Feb. 13, 2021 statement on the Senate floor where he had denounced Trump and declared him to be “practically and morally responsible” for the U.S. Capitol attack.
McConnell has argued that his goal is to leave the Republican Senate majority to his successor and that he would be staying away from the former President. He has also not made any attempt to defend Trump from Democratic attacks.
However, there are other GOP members, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis who were quick to forgive and forget the personal attacks that Trump had launched against them.
