A North Carolina carjacking suspect faces murder charges after police say he mowed down a good Samaritan who helped thwart a carjacking attempt and died after opening fire on the suspect, who stole the victim’s work truck instead before fleeing the scene in eyewitness video taken outside a Burger King restaurant.
The incident happened in March, but the graphic video emerged online over the weekend.
It shows the victim, whom Lumberton police identified as 38-year-old Jonathan Adam Lecompte, confronting suspect Ricky Driggers, 28, in the crowded parking lot.
Lecompte is seen yelling at Driggers not to get in the truck, but he hops into the truck anyway, and slams the door shut.
Trying to stop him, Lecompte opens fire.
Then Driggers puts the vehicle in reverse, backs up into the parking lot, then puts it in drive and steps on the gas, plowing into Lecompte and sending him flying into the air.
Driggers then drives away with the truck, while onlookers scream in horror.
Driggers later wrecked the truck and was arrested. He is being held without bail on charges of first-degree murder, larceny of a motor vehicle, attempted robbery and fleeing arrest, the report explains.

The Lumberton Police Department shared the following details in a Facebook post on March 14:
On Thursday, March 14th, 2024 at 10:29 am Lumberton Emergency Communications was notified of an attempted carjacking that took place on the 4100 block of West 5th Street.
While officers were en route to the initial call additional information was received that the suspect had been involved in a hit-and run in the parking lot of Go Gas at 2605 W 5th Street and was trying to carjack another vehicle on W 5th Street in front of McDonald’s.
Good Samaritans got involved to prevent the carjacking but the suspect was then able to steal the vehicle of one of the good Samaritans. In the process of stealing the vehicle the suspect reportedly intentionally struck one of the good Samaritans with the stolen vehicle.
The male victim who was struck by the vehicle was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Officers arriving on the scene saw the suspect as he was fleeing the scene and pursued the suspect in the stolen vehicle until the suspect wrecked the stolen vehicle on Selma Road near Highway 41.
The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Ricky Alex Driggers of Odum Road in Lumberton, NC, has been taken into custody.
Additional details will be released at a later time.
