Residents are opposing Massachusetts’ plan to convert a former veterans’ home in Chelsea into a shelter for 100 migrant families.
The vacant Chelsea Soldiers’ Home was previously used to house veterans and had been scheduled for demolition.
“I can’t believe the Chelsea Soldiers’ Home, which is for the Vets, is going to [be] used for the immigrants overflow,” Massachusetts resident George Belmonte said. “How about taking care of the homeless vets first? I am all for helping people but how about taking care of those already here and homeless.”
Locals argue the facility should instead prioritize homeless veterans, noting veterans currently pay hundreds of dollars monthly to live there, while migrants would stay for free.
“Disgusting,” Massachusetts resident Denise Levy wrote.
However, the Secretary of Veterans Services said it would not impact veteran services, as Massachusetts can care for both veterans and families experiencing homelessness.
“Massachusetts has proven that we can take care of veterans and families experiencing homelessness in our state,” Secretary Dr. Jon Santiago said.
Starting May 1st, migrants at the new safety-net site would have to prove they are working to become self-sufficient by applying for work authorization, learning English, and seeking permanent residency.
The migrant crisis has been complex for Massachusetts, as its newest emergency shelter in Boston reached full 400-person capacity in just one week.
