Donned in a black and white habit, a traditional garment worn by nuns, with an unbuttoned blouse, Rihanna dressed up as a “sexy nun” for the latest issue of Interview Magazine.
However, this obsession with portraying and hypersexualizing religious imagery won’t go unnoticed and has earned the ire of many Catholics and Christians, including Rihanna’s fans.
Critics blasted Rihanna and the magazine for disrespecting religious imagery. One remarked: Why won’t Hollywood mock Islam or any other religion?
Always mocking Christianity/Catholicism?
Graham Allen, host of Dear America on Rumble, said, “This video of @rihanna is blasphemous and DEMONIC!! Christianity is under attack!! WAKE UP!!!”
Another X user blasted: “Mocking Christians and being blasphemous is just boring at this point.”
“Rihanna just spit in the face of every practicing Catholic in this country and around the world. What in the world is this blasphemy?” said Joey Mannarino.
@sam__naidoo, whose comment got over 10,000 likes, wrote: ‘This is just distasteful, I’m not even Christian or Catholic and I feel like it’s just disrespect and in poor taste.’
User @thankyounxett wrote, in part: ‘But it’s so dehumanizing and degrading to see Christianity being continuously mocked, as well as witnessing religious imagery being used for the wrong purposes. No matter what religious convictions we uphold, we should respect them, regardless of where we stand. And seeing people endorse this is honestly just disrespectful.’
Ultimately, many fans also wondered why the Fenty Beauty founder, “out of all the fashion in the world,” has chosen “to mock a religion.”
The singer also earned the ire of Hindus for sporting a necklace with the Hindu god Ganesha as a pendant in a topless photoshoot in 2021.
They called for the musician to remove the post from all her social media platforms, while some criticized her for being “disrespectful” to their religion.
Rihanna also apologized for using the song Doom by artist Coucou Chloe, which contains a collection of sacred texts from the Koran.
The Arabic verse, also known as Hadith, talks about judgment day.
Rihanna, on Instagram, remarked, “I’d like to thank the Muslim community for pointing out a huge oversight that was unintentionally offensive in our Savage x Fenty show.”
“I would, more importantly, like to apologize to you for this honest, yet careless mistake.”
She added, “I do not play with any kind of disrespect toward God or any religion, and therefore the use of the song in our project was completely irresponsible!”
