O.J. Simpson passed away from prostate cancer Thursday at the age of 76, and the media curiously downplayed the fact that he was an accused double murderer.
There were plenty of thoughts and prayers for Simpson’s family and accolades for him, with reports including that he was a Heisman winner, an NFL Hall of Famer, and an actor, but little attention was paid to the fact that while Simpson may have been acquitted in the brutal murders of ex-wife Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman, he was deemed liable for their deaths in civil court.
This prescribed narrative seemed to carry all the way to the White House, as seen when press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was asked about a response to Simpson’s passing and had nothing to say about Brown and Goldman.
A reporter asked, “Was there any reaction to OJ Simpson’s death? Do you know if they ever crossed paths, and if so how? When?”
“Our thoughts are with his families during this difficult time — obviously with his family and loved ones,” Jean-Pierre said. “And I’ll say this, I know that they have asked for some privacy. And so we’re going to respect that. And I’ll just leave it there.”

In what was billed the “trial of the century,” Simpson went before a jury for the sloppy murders with plenty of evidence against him, but with a combination of suspect prosecutors and a racially biased jury, the former player walked.
His acquittal — perhaps the most shameful moment in US jurisprudence history — resulted in many black Americans cheering out loud after he was deemed not guilty, with little regard to the two victims butchered with a knife. For many, Simpson getting off for murdering two white people was seen as a balancing of the scales.
Here’s a quick sampling of responses to the story, as seen on X:
Murdering black man “our condolences”
Family of the Jewish man he murdered “……….”
Well who could have seen that coming
