CV NEWS FEED // The Diocese of Syracuse in New York is being forced to close another Catholic school due to financial difficulties and declining enrollment.
The diocese announced in a March 23 news release that Cathedral Academy at Pompei (CAP) will be closed at the end of the 2024 academic year.
The academy was the result of a merger in 2006 that combined two Catholic schools. Despite combining the two schools, the academy, which is primarily supported by Our Lady of Pompei/St. Peter’s Church, has seen a drop in enrollment.
“I truly empathize with the families of the CAP School community, who desire a Catholic school education, but the low enrollment, the financial stress on the parish and the depleted resources have forced this difficult decision”, Bishop Douglas Lucia stated in the news release.
“I remain firm in my commitment to our Catholic schools and Catholic education which are important tools in sharing the Good News and evangelizing efforts that each of our schools provide our young people,” he continued.
Fr. Dan Caruso, pastor of Our Lady of Pompei/St. Peter’s Church, stated in a joint letter with Dr. Amy Sansone, superintendent of Catholic schools, that he remains committed to serving the educational needs of the parishioners.
“We will work tirelessly to ensure that every child has access to a quality Catholic education and that our parish continues to be a place of warmth, compassion and faith,” Caruso and Sansone wrote.
