There is a little piece of history up for sale in Georgetown.
The home is one of the oldest lots in the neighborhood as well as having some significant history behind it.
The home has hosted all three recent Democrat presidents at one point, with Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and Joe Biden having all attended events there.
Piece of History
The home was built in 1891 in what has become one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in Georgetown.
The 8-bedroom, 7.5-bath home boasts 9,324 sq. ft. of space, which includes a rooftop terrace that has “spectacular views of the Kennedy Performing Arts Center, the Potomac River, and well into Virginia.”
The listing agent, Michael Rankin of TTR Sotheby’s International Realty, stated, “While D.C. has numerous historic neighborhoods with houses that are over 100 years old, the residence sits on one of the oldest residential lots in Georgetown dating back to 1703.”
He added, “The historic provenance, scale of rooms, 12-foot ceilings, and splendid original details all lend to hosting on a grand scale.”
The current owners of the home purchased the home in 1995 for just shy of $1 million (the home is now listing for almost $10 million).
Prior to that, the home had been owned by W. Averell Harriman, the former governor of New York, who turned it into a place where the political elite often gathered for social events.
As noted above, among those who visited were Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and then-Senator Joe Biden (D-DE).
Rankin stated that Harriman “later married his second wife, Pamela, [who] became ambassador to France, and they were a power couple entertaining prominent political figures including U.S. presidents, vice presidents [and] senators.”
The inside of the home is spectacular, with a completely modernized kitchen area that is ideal for hosting.
If you have an extra $10 million to spare and want to buy a piece of this country’s history, feel free to check out the home on Realtor.com for more information.
