An armed U.S. Secret Service agent part of Vice President Kamala Harris’s protective detail engaged in a physical altercation with other agents during the early hours of Monday morning.
The altercation transpired at Andrews Air Force Base on Monday in the Washington, D.C. area, prior to Vice President Harris’s scheduled arrival.
This incident followed what the Secret Service has identified as a “medical incident” suffered by the agent in question. RealClearPolitics’ Susan Crabtree highlighted that others have held “DEI concerns” over the agent’s hiring.

The Washington Examiner reports that while it knows the agent’s identity and their specific duties, the outlet has chosen to withhold this information out of respect for the individual’s privacy.
Sources familiar with the matter told the Examiner that the agent in question exhibited aggressive behavior towards fellow agents, leading to a physical altercation. Attempts were made by the special agent in charge and a detail shift supervisor to de-escalate the situation.
The agent was eventually restrained and removed from duty for a medical evaluation.
Crabtree provided some additional details about the altercation on X, emphasizing the possibility of concerns within the organization over the hiring of this particular agent.
She wrote, “Sources within the Secret Service community tell me the agent assigned to VP Kamala Harris was armed during the fight – that the gun was secured in the agent’s holster until other agents physically restrained the agent and took the gun from the agent’s possession.”
“I’m also told there are DEI concerns among the USSS community about the hiring of this agent,” she continued. “Other agents and officers within the USSS are asking questions about the agent’s hiring process, whether the USSS did enough to look into the agent’s background and monitor the agent’s mental well-being because there have been widespread concerns about other strange behavior before this incident. ”
Crabtree also chose not to disclose the agent’s name.

In an update, Crabtree shared “Sources say the agent in question was acted erratically upon showing up for a traveling shift at Joint Base Andrews. The agent ended up tackling the Senior Agent in Charge of the VP detail, got on top of him and started punching him.”
“At this point, I’m told, the agent who was attacking the SAIC did indeed have a gun, but it was in the holster. Other agents are expressing relief that the agent did not shoot the SAIC,” she added.

Secret Service Chief of Communications Anthony Guglielmi provided a statement to The Washington Examiner, stating, “At approximately 9 a.m. April 22, a U.S. Secret Service special agent supporting the Vice President’s departure from Joint Base Andrews began displaying behavior their colleagues found distressing.”
Guglielmi affirmed that the Vice President was not present at the time of the incident and her departure from Joint Base Andrews remained unaffected.
“The U.S. Secret Service takes the safety and health of our employees very seriously. As this was a medical matter, we will not disclose any further details,” he emphasized.
All Secret Service agents are notably armed while on domestic protective duty. This aspect remains a priority for the Secret Service, akin to their counterparts in the Diplomatic Security Service, the Examiner reports.
The Vice Presidential Protective Division (VPD) holds a prestigious status within the Secret Service, often considered the second most esteemed assignment following the Presidential Protective Division.
The outlet highlights that this designation stems from the division’s critical involvement in continuity of government protocols, necessitating meticulous planning for potential scenarios such as nuclear warfare, catastrophic terrorist attacks, or environmental disasters.
Agents aspiring to join the VPD ranks must meet stringent criteria. They are required to accumulate a minimum of three years of field office service and demonstrate outstanding performance before being considered for VPD assignment.
Successful candidates must also undergo rigorous training at the Secret Service’s James J. Rowley training facility located in the suburbs of Washington, D.C.
The Examiner has not received any updates for the current status of the agent involved in the incident.
The Vice President’s office has yet to respond to inquiries, despite the outlet reaching out for comment.
