The campaign for Derek Myers, a Republican candidate competing in Ohio’s 2nd Congressional District race, committed a series of embarrassing mistakes, including accidentally sending out a concession email, hours before the close of Tuesday’s primary.
An email from Myers’ campaign office that was sent to media outlets on Tuesday at around 3 p.m. ET lamented that “tonight did not go as we had hoped.”
Myers said “from a private watch party in Chillicothe” that he was looking forward to uniting behind the “Congressman-Elect” to get President Trump reelected to the White House by defeating President Biden. Polls in Ohio close at 7:30 p.m. ET.
Myers wrote in the email: “Listen, I’m in my thirties and as I’ve told everyone on this campaign trial, ‘if I don’t win this race, that’s okay!’ I’ve got thirty-or-fifty more years left – and that’s if I live a good live… I’m looking forward to staying in the arena of Ohio politics and working with all Republicans to make Ohio great again!”
Myers’ campaign office sent a follow-up email nearly ten minutes later, admitting that the previous email was incorrect and sent “in error, due to a technical issue.”
The second email added: “Please disregard the email. Thank you.”
About 30 minutes later, Myers sent another email with additional details about the incident. The email was titled “Curious about what happened, huh?”
Myers clarified that his campaign team had drafted two emails for the evening, one announcing victory and the other conceding the race.
Attention Press: My campaign comms team has sent out an email in error as we prepare for both possible outcomes tonight. The polls remain open until 7:30 p.m. Please disregard the email. Thank you.
