On the campaign trail, Donald Trump has once again been promising to rid the government of the “swamp” and “deep state.”
Throughout his presidency, we saw resistance to Trump inside the government that eventually led to Trump being impeached.
Democrats would love to see that happen again if Trump manages to win the 2024 election, and Biden is trying to make sure they at least have the opportunity to do so.
Lock Them In
Biden is making some serious changes to how federal workers can be fired.
This week, the White House announced new rules that were being implemented to ” protect nonpartisan civil servants.”
The administration announced “protections for 2.2 million career civil servants from political interference, to guarantee that they can carry out their responsibilities in the best interest of the American people.
“Day in and day out, career civil servants provide the expertise and continuity necessary for our democracy to function.
“They provide Americans with life-saving and life-changing services and put opportunity within reach for millions.
“That’s why since taking office, I have worked to strengthen, empower, and rebuild our career workforce.”
This new rule would nullify Schedule F, a rule put in place by the Trump administration that reclassified government posts as political appointments for the thousands of jobs that typically change hands when a new party takes over the White House.
House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer (R-KY) blasted Biden for the rule change.
He stated, “OPM’s final rule is yet another example of the Biden Administration’s efforts to insulate the federal workforce from accountability.
“The federal workforce exists to serve the American people, yet many Americans have a deep and growing distrust of the federal bureaucracy.
“The Biden Administration’s rule will further undermine Americans’ confidence in their government since it allows poor performing federal workers and those who attempt to thwart the policies of a duly elected President to remain entrenched in the federal bureaucracy. We need more accountability for the unelected federal bureaucracy, not less.”
National Treasury Employees Union President Doreen Greenwald celebrated the new rule, responding, “It will now be much harder for any president to arbitrarily remove the nonpartisan professionals who staff our federal agencies just to make room for hand-picked partisan loyalists.”
If Trump wins the election, expect him to take this on right away, as it takes months for the Office of Personnel Management to draft new rules, all of which would then be challenged by Democrats and activist groups in the courts.
He has vowed to cut government fat, and I doubt anyone reading this right now would argue with that in order to downsize our current government.
