On a recent episode of The View, Fatso Whoopi Goldberg sparred with former host Elisabeth Hasselbeck over abortion, with Goldberg — who has admitted to having multiple abortions — choosing to use religion as an excuse to say that it’s acceptable to kill preborn children.
Hasselbeck began by pointing out there are other options for women besides just abortion, with countless organizations ready and willing to help pregnant women and their children, often at no cost. “I might not change your minds, but I hope women out there know to look for the nonprofits, look for the agencies that help you create a birth plan and match you with an adoptive family who may have suffered miscarriage after miscarriage who want to care for the baby,” she said. “So, that option is real and it’s out there. And I don’t believe they’re giving women half the information out there. And I think those lives have a precious value on them.”
She then added, “I personally believe… our creator assigns value to life and that those lives have plan and purpose over them as designed by God that are not limited to the circumstances of conception, nor the situations they’re born into.”
Goldberg took those comments — that our lives are created by God Himself — and twisted them into pro-abortion propaganda.
“God doesn’t make mistakes. God made us smart enough to know when it wasn’t going to work for us. That’s the beauty of giving us freedom of choice,” she said. “Yes. Because I know my relationship, you know, my relationship [with God] is always choppy. It’s always choppy. With God, always. Because I have a lot of questions. … I also know that God made me smart enough to know that if there are alternatives out there that can work for me, I will investigate them. God said, do unto others as you would have them do unto you. I will not make that decision for anybody.”
While Christianity does state that God gave humankind free will, that is never depicted in Scripture as a reason to let people do whatever they want, with no judgment or repercussions. Both the Old Testament and the New Testament command followers not to murder, and abortion deliberately takes a human life every single time. Free will does not mean God does not care if we take lives or break his commandments; it means we have the choice to follow Him (to choose the good) or the choice to turn away (to sin). Goldberg is correct in that we have the ability to make our own choices, but logically, that cannot possibly mean that any and every choice a human being makes is right or moral. (Even our own human societal laws reflect this fact in assigning penalties for harming others or stealing their property.)
Free will, properly understood, cannot be used as a defense for homicide.
