FBI Director Christopher Wray on Monday sounded alarm on the “wide array” of terrorist threats entering the U.S. border, which includes drug trafficking, violent gangs, and smugglers who have links with ISIS.
Mr. Wray made these remarks during the annual “Worldwide Threats” congressional hearings, where heads of US intelligence agencies testify.
The FBI director said, “We are seeing a wide array of very dangerous threats that emanate from the border.”
“The FBI alone seized enough fentanyl in the last two years to kill 270 million people,” he said.
Also present in the hearing were Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines; CIA Director William Burns; General Timothy Haugh, director of the National Security Agency and Commander of the US Cyber Command; and Lieutenant General Jeffrey Kruse, director of the Defense Intelligence Agency.
The hearing highlights the increased threats from foreign intruders coming from China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea, intensified by the mishandling of the US-Mexico border.
Rep. Trent Kelly asked Wray if the bureau can assure the chamber of its capacity to trace and determine the locations of all recognized or suspected terrorists, or individuals on watchlists, who entered the southern border or any other border. Furthermore, he inquired if these individuals were apprehended, deported, or even monitored by security forces.
“There are a few different categories of people that we have concerns about,” Wray answered.
“When a known or suspected terrorist, as in known that they’re a known or suspected terrorist, is apprehended at the border, I’m confident that in the vast majority of instances, there’s a very close lash-up between the FBI and DHS (Department of Homeland Security) on it.
“The bigger concern is a situation, for example, where somebody presents fake identification documents at the border and there’s not biometrics to match up—so there’s no way to be able to know that they’re not who they say they are. Then, they get into the country; then somehow we find out that they’re someone in fact who’s on the list.”
The FBI director also said that over the past five years, they have seen an increase in the number of known or suspected terrorists who were attempting to enter the southern border.
Wray added that threats coming from various terrorist groups are all elevated at once.
“Well, even before October 7, I would have told this committee that we were at a heightened threat level from a terrorism perspective,” Wray said on Monday.
With this information from Mr. Wray, Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) warned that the country is facing an enormous terror threat, “greater than [it has been] any time since September 11,” citing that since Joe Biden enters office “we’ve had 10.4 million people” cross the border illegally.”
