American divorce rates dropped while marriage rates rose, according to new data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics.
Researchers found that in 2022 the marriage rate rose to 6.2 per capita and over 2 million in a year after nosediving in 2020 because of the pandemic.
Some experts believe that the pandemic may have been a significant factor in pushing many couples towards marriage.
Conversely, the divorce rate is falling, as the CDC found that in 2022, it stood at 2.4 per 1,000 people. That is up just one point from 2021 when it was 2.3 per 1,000 people.
Ian Kerner, a licensed marriage and family therapist, explained: “In my practice over the last decade, I’ve noticed a gradual shift from the ‘romantic marriage’ to the ‘companionate marriage,’ meaning that people are increasingly choosing spouses at the outset who are more like best friends than passion-partners.”
One way or another, this is good news for an American society that has been lacking stability in the family for decades.
