The bodies of two migrants were found on a Texas highway following a possible human smuggling attempt gone awry earlier this month, authorities say.
On June 12, a motorist alerted police about bodies lying on an Interstate 10 on-ramp near Van Horn in West Texas.
Responding authorities found a deceased man and woman at the scene and an investigation was launched by U.S. Border Patrol and the Culberson County Sheriff’s Office.
Fingerprint checks revealed the individuals to be Edgar Vividor-Rodriguez, a citizen of Mexico, and Rosenda Gomez-Lopez, a citizen of Guatemala.
Both were determined to have entered the United States illegally.
Authorities believe “the individuals may have passed away from heat exposure or dehydration and were subsequently pushed from a vehicle” during a smuggling attempt, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) explained in a press release.
Autopsy results are still pending, according to the most current available updates.
“Human smugglers are heinous individuals who profit from smuggling undocumented migrants without prejudice and with a clear disregard of whether the people on whom they prey end up paying the final price,” Frank B. Burrola, special agent in charge of HSI El Paso, said in a statement.
“Homeland Security Investigations is laser focused on ensuring human smugglers face the consequences of their reprehensible actions.”
HSI El Paso is leading the ongoing investigation.
