President Joe Biden has spoken out about the recent death of Oklahoma transgender teen Nex Benedict, declaring himself “heartbroken,” as NBC News reports.
Benedict passed away on Feb. 8 following a fight at school, and while initial reports suggested that injuries sustained in the brawl itself were what led to their demise, the death was ruled a suicide last week.
Sad circumstances abound
As the Daily Mail notes, Benedict was involved in a violent encounter with fellow students in a bathroom at Owasso High School.
Benedict later indicated that they had “blacked out” amid the beating and later sought medical attention at a hospital at the urging of family members.
It was not until the next day that the teen’s family summoned 911, and the youngster was ultimately pronounced dead.
Early reports of the incident appeared to place blame for the death on those involved in the bathroom melee, a theory that seemed to fit, given statements from Nex’s mother indicating that her child had been subjected to bullying over issues of gender identity since the school year began.
However, a medical examiner’s report released last week determined that Nex, 16, died as the result of “combined toxicity” of allergy medicine and fluoxetine, a commonly prescribed anti-anxiety drug.
Biden weighs in
The president on Thursday offered public comment on the tragic death, saying, “Jill and I are heartbroken by the recent loss of Nex Benedict.”
“Every young person deserves to have the fundamental right and freedom to be who they are and feel safe and supported at school and in their communities,” he went on.
Biden continued, “Nex Benedict, a kid who just wanted to be accepted, should still be here with us today.”
Calling for a greater commitment to addressing teen suicide and discrimination, Biden went on, “Bullying is hurtful and cruel, and no one should face the bullying that Nex did. Parents and schools must take reports of bullying seriously.”
Speaking directly to “all LGTBTQI+ Americans for whom this tragedy feels so personal,” and who he undoubtedly hopes will continue to support him as the November election approaches, Biden said, “I will always have your back.”
