Most Americans were shocked to hear last week that an armed man was arrested for attempting to assassinate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
Although the Senate quickly passed a bill that would increase security for Supreme Court justices, House Democrats are holding it up. That fact recently led one Republican lawmaker to lash out.
“Still under threat”
During a Tuesday appearance on Fox & Friends, Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise complained that Democrats are leaving the justices in a precarious position.
“They’re now saying they may bring it this week, but this should have been done weeks ago,” Breitbart quoted him as saying. “Again, over a month ago, it came over from the Senate unanimously.”
“This could pass overwhelmingly if they put it on the calendar. I don’t know why they are delaying it, but the Supreme Court justices are still under threat,” the Republican pointed out.
It’s the law
Scalise went on to reference 18 US Code § 1507, a federal law that prohibits demonstrations outside the homes of judges.
“Why the Justice Department, by the way, isn’t enforcing federal law that says you can’t go and try to intimidate and threaten Supreme Court justices in front of their homes — any kind of federal judges are not by law allowed to be threatened that way, and yet the Justice Department won’t take action. They need to. This is a real concern.”
Last month, the radical pro-abortion group Ruth Sent Us publicized the home addresses of conservative justices, leading to loud protests.
That came after Politico published a leaked draft opinion by Justice Samuel Alito showing that the Court appears ready to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Scalise survived being shot
Politically motivated violence is something Scalise has first-hand experience with, as in 2017 he was shot along with four others prior to the annual Congressional Baseball Game.
According to Fox News, the shooter was James T. Hodgkinson, a left-wing extremist who had formerly worked as a volunteer for Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign.
Scalise told the network how there is “not a day that goes by where I don’t thank God for allowing me to still be here doing the things I love.”
