The crisis in Haiti is getting worse by the day.
Florida could be overwhelmed by an influx of residents fleeing the country.
And Ron DeSantis was grinning from ear to ear when a Haitian gave him this message.
Haiti has become a failed state, with escalating gang violence spreading throughout the country.
The acting Prime Minister has resigned, leaving warring gangs battling for control of Port-au-Prince, the country’s capital and largest city.
The anarchy engulfing Haiti could lead to a mass migration event, with residents fleeing for the United States.
Florida prepares for potential influx of Haitians
Haiti is about 600 miles from the southern boundary of Florida, sparking fears the state could become the destination for fleeing residents.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced that 250 additional officers and soldiers with the Florida State Guard, Division of Emergency Management, and state law enforcement were deployed to the Florida Keys and the waters surrounding them.
“For quite some time, the State of Florida has been dedicating significant resources to combat illegal vessels coming to Florida from countries such as Haiti,” DeSantis said. “Given the circumstances in Haiti, I have directed the Division of Emergency Management, the Florida State Guard, and state law enforcement agencies to deploy over 250 additional officers and soldiers and over a dozen air and sea craft to the southern coast of Florida to protect our state. No state has done more to supplement the (under-resourced) U.S. Coast Guard’s interdiction efforts; we cannot have illegal aliens coming to Florida.”
He slammed President Joe Biden for creating a situation where illegal aliens feel “empowered” to come to the United States.
Democrats and the media attacked DeSantis for the decision to bolster Florida’s southern border.
Haitian State Representative backs DeSantis’ decision
Republican State Representative Berny Jacques defended DeSantis deploying forces to prepare for an influx of Haitians.
Jacques was born in Port-au-Prince and immigrated to the United States in 1994.
He has become one of the leading conservatives in the Florida Legislature and a top ally of DeSantis.
“I’ve been in touch with the Governor’s office about the chaos in Haiti and the potential mass migration to our shores as a result; I was pleased to hear that a plan is in place,” Jacques said. “Florida will do everything in its power to protect our border and our citizens here and abroad.”
Ron DeSantis is being proactive to make sure that Florida is ready to handle any arrival of illegal aliens from Haiti.
