The House committee investigating the events that led up to the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021, have announced that they believe they have sufficient evidence to have former President Donald Trump indicted by the Justice Department.
According to the Associated Press, it was on Sunday, just three days after the primetime hearing, that members of the committee revealed that throughout the course of their investigation, they believe they can prove Trump was the key driver of the chaos that took place on that day in 2021.
On Monday, the second hearing will take place. Former Fox News political editor Chris Stirewalt is set to testify. Stirewalt was part of the Fox News election results team that made the highly controversial call for then-candidate Brain-Dead Biden winning Arizona, which sparked Trump to ramp up claims of election fraud taking place.
Bill Stepien, a former 2020 Trump campaign adviser, was set to testify as well, but canceled at the very last minute due to a “family emergency,” Yahoo News reported. His counsel is set to appear in his place.
The hearings
On Monday, the committee was said to be focusing on what they’ve labeled as the “big lie,” which they reference as Trump’s repeated attempts to convince his followers, and the country, that the 2020 election was rife with fraud, and that he’s the rightful winner.
During Thursday night’s primetime hearing to get things started, the committee laid the groundwork to pin the blame for Jan. 6 almost directly on Trump, even showing clips of his daughter, Ivanka Trump, and former AG Bill Barr admitting that no real proof of voter or ballot fraud was ever shown.
The AP added: “Chairman Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., and vice chair Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., are set to lead the morning hearing after last week’s blockbuster session drew nearly 20 million Americans to see its prime-time findings.”
The point of this week’s series of hearings, Marketwatch noted, is to lay the groundwork to prove that Trump and his top allies engaged in a “massive effort” to spread misinformation regarding the results of the 20202 election, which the committee believes played a central role in the events that took place on Jan. 6.
Possible indictment
Many believe the Jan. 6 House committee’s primary goal is to muddy Trump’s name just enough to keep him out of the 2024 presidential election, which he’ll almost certainly enter.
That’s why House Dems — and the two Republicans — on the committee will work to convince Attorney General Merrick Garland to pursue a criminal indictment, which would be an unprecedented turn of events, but would likely accomplish their mission of knocking Trump out as a contender for 2024.
There’s no telling what 1/6 committee members will pull out of their hats this week, as they’ve already offered a handful of surprises, including Stepien’s testimony, which was only announced less than 24 hours prior to Monday’s hearings.
Only time will tell what the ultimate outcome is of these hearings, but it’s clear that Democrats are going for blood.
