In a recent radio interview, Republican Senator Katie Britt criticized Biden for his border policies following her response to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address. The Alabama junior U.S. Senator blamed Biden for allowing Jose Ibarra, the suspect in the murder of University of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley, to enter the country illegally.
Since her Republican-centric state-of-the-union response, Britt has continuously targeted Biden on a wide range of issues, specifically immigration and the economy. Here are five things to know about Sen. Britt…

#1 Family upbringing: Her mother, Debra Boyd, worked as a dance teacher, while her father, Julian Boyd, ran a hardware store in Enterprise, Alabama. She is the oldest of four Boyd daughters. In her youth, she took part in state beauty pageants. She was crowned Little Miss Enterprise in first grade, then 1989 Little Miss National Peanut Festival the next year.
#2 Starting out: Britt initially came to Washington in 2004 as a congressional staffer. After obtaining a law degree from the University of Alabama, she held multiple roles, such as press secretary, communications director, and chief of staff for Alabama Senator Richard Shelby, whose senate seat she would eventually hold.
#3 Election background: In 2022, at the age of 42, she succeeded former Shelby as junior senator from Alabama. She competed against Rep. Mo Brooks in the Republican primary runoff and received an endorsement from former President Donald Trump. She holds the distinction of being the youngest Republican woman ever elected to the Senate and the first woman to represent Alabama in the Senate.
#4 Husband Wesley: Her husband, Wesley Britt, served as her campaign chairman and is currently working as a state lobbyist. He is also a former NFL football player, having played tackle for the New England Patriots for four years. They share two children together.
#Abortion views: Britt is affirmatively pro-life, which came under scrutiny during the 2022 U.S. Senate election. Her early television ads highlighted her position on abortion, stating that she believes life starts at conception and likening late-term abortions to murder. In response to the Alabama Supreme Court’s 2024 decision that classified frozen embryos as living beings, Britt commented that “defending life and ensuring ongoing access to IVF services for caring parents are not contradictory.” She then pushed for state and federal legislation to safeguard families’ rights to access IVF services.
