Russia responded to an attack from Ukraine with a barrage of 31 ballistic and cruise missiles in Kyiv on Thursday, March 21.
It was Moscow’s first attack on the Ukraine capital in six weeks, Knewz.com has learned.
However, air defenses shot down all of the missiles. Still, 13 people including a child were hurt as wreckage fell on them, according to CBS News.
The attack took place at approximately 5 a.m. local time. Missiles arrived in the city from different directions, said Serhii Popko, head of the Kyiv City Administration.
According to Ukraine’s air force, the weapons launched included two ballistic missiles and 29 cruise missiles.
The attack was in response to Ukraine’s assaults on Belgorod in recent days.
Russia President Vladimir Putin said a little before the attacks that his military would “respond in kind,” adding that his country “can respond in the same way regarding civilian infrastructure and all other objects of this kind that the enemy attacks. We have our own views on this matter and our own plans. We will follow what we have outlined.”
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that an 11-year-old girl and 38-year-old man were injured in the attack. Ukraine’s emergency services added that approximately 80 people had to leave their homes amid the blasts.
One apartment was set on fire during the assault. The blasts left streets littered with debris.
Earlier Thursday, five people were hurt in Ukraine’s latest attack in Belgorod, according to Gov. Vyacheslav Gladkov.
The attacks came two days after Ukraine attempted to attack a Russian strategic bomber base.
As Knewz.com reported on Tuesday, March 19, the drones were destroyed over the city of Engels in Russia’s Saratov Oblast, according to a Russian official
“Dear residents, information about a loud bang and flash in Engels early in the morning is being spread on social networks and the media. I want to assure you that no emergency incidents occurred in residential areas of the city. There is no reason to worry. No civilian infrastructure was damaged,” regional governor Roman Busargin wrote in a Telegram post translated by Knewz.com.
“Information about incidents at military facilities is verified by law enforcement agencies,” Busargin added.
Newsweek, citing Russian Telegram channel Astra, reports that there were four drones, three of which that fell close to the airbase. The fourth reportedly was unaccounted for.
Russia’s Tu-95 and Tu160 bombers are housed at the airbase targeted, Engels 2. Both bombers have wreaked havoc in Ukraine in the two-plus years of war.
Ukraine has targeted the airbase previously. However, the latest attack was thwarted by air defense systems.
“Drones were eliminated over [the city of] Engels less than an hour ago. The air defense system worked in a timely and effective manner,” Busargin said Telegram, according to The Moscow Times, which added that there were no casualties.
“There were no injuries or damage to infrastructure caused by falling debris,” Busargin said.
