Two guys were shot in a Chicago neighborhood gun-free zone called a “Safe Passage” route. The route was mapped out specifically for schools in order to protect kids and teachers from violence “as they cross gang boundaries on their way to and from their new schools, following the closing of 49 elementary schools this summer.”
I guess it’s working out pretty well. Only two people have been shot on it, and only one of them has died. It could have been worse:
“Ralph McNeal, 54, was pronounced dead less than an hour later, after he was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. A 26-year-old man also was taken to Stroger Hospital, and was in critical condition, according to the Fire Department.”
Granted, according to the local Chicago CBS affiliate, the Safe Passage route hasn’t yet been staffed. It won’t be until school starts on August 26th. Chicago Failing Public Schools has hired 600 workers to monitor the route, and the Chicago Police Department indicated that another 1,500 volunteers will be present.
But is that really going to help matters? Won’t that just increase the victim potential? And will these school officials and volunteers be carrying guns? If they don’t work for the police, they won’t be allowed to. So what good will they be? The gang members will have all the guns, and if they happen to get in a gunfight with rivals, they’re not going to bother being careful. If they end up shooting and killing some kids, they’ll just be collateral damage.
These gun-free school zones in Chicago are going to learn the hard way that prohibiting adults and teachers from protecting their kids and students from gangs will only lead to more victims. Setting boundaries for “gun-free” zones does nothing except attract criminals. In gun-free zones, criminals aren’t met with any opposition.
