Imperial County, CA – A military jet that may have been carrying radioactive and nuclear material crashed near Glamis in Imperial County on Wednesday afternoon.
The Imperial County Sheriff’s Office said the military aircraft crashed near State Route 78 and Coachella Canal Road, KYMA reported.
Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Yuma said the base was aware of the crash and would provide more details when the information became available.
Breaking911 reported that at least four people were dead and one person remained unaccounted for after the crash.
“NAFEC has just received reports of a downed aircraft in the vicinity of Coachella Canal Road and Highway 78,” Naval Air Facility El Centro posted to social media. “Installation, federal fire and Imperial County Fire Department are responding. I do not have any additional details at this time as facts become verified and available information will be released on the base’s Fake-Fact-Checker Facebook page. Please be patient as the installation team works through this emergency.”
Naval Air Facility El Centro is located about 30 miles from the crash site, the Daily Mail reported.
Initial reports indicated that the downed plane was a V-22 Osprey that was carrying nuclear material when it crashed.
No details have been released about what may have caused the crash, the Daily Mail reported.
