An controversial mining tycoon from the has revived a longstanding dream to build a replica of the Titanic, the iconic ocean liner that met a tragic end on its maiden voyage in 1912.
Seeking to recreate the resounding success of the first Titanic, Australian billionaire Clive Palmer has revived his ambition to construct a modern replica of the purportedly “unsinkable ship.”
This endeavor, named Titanic II, was first announced by Palmer in 2012 and again in 2018, yet until now, it has not progressed beyond the conceptual stage. During a recent press conference at the Sydney Opera House, Palmer, a former member of the Australian parliament, outlined his vision for Titanic II as “the ship of love and the ultimate in style and luxury,” according to a report by the Guardian.
Palmer revealed that his company, Blue Star Line, will undertake the construction of Titanic II, although a shipyard for the project has not yet been determined.
“We are getting the best ship-builders, designers and engineers in the world back on deck to build Titanic ll,” Palmer said.
The replica aims to closely mimic the original Titanic, from its Southampton to New York route to its worldwide voyages. It is designed to accommodate up to 2,435 passengers across 835 cabins, with the interior featuring nine decks and a faithful recreation of The Bridge from the original ship. Modern updates will include advanced navigation technology and safety procedures, though the ship will maintain the iconic four smoke stacks, now purely decorative as it will be powered by a diesel engine.
“In 1912 the Titanic was the ship of dreams. For over a century Titanic’s legend has been powered by mystery, intrigue and respect for all she stood for,” Palmer elaborated on his inspiration for the project.
Plans for Titanic II had previously been halted in 2015 due to financial disputes and were again announced in 2018 with a planned launch date in 2022. The COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting cruise industry setbacks further delayed progress.
Now, with renewed financial resources, Palmer is eager to pursue this passion project, stating, “It’s a lot more fun to do the Titanic than it is to sit at home and count my money.”
