Washington — Rep. Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin announced Friday he will step down in April, shrinking the already-thin Republican majority in the House even further.
Gallagher, who represents Wisconsin’s 8th Congressional District, said he would leave Congress on April 19, instead of staying until January to complete his term. His departure means Republicans can lose only one vote if all Democrats stick together.
“I’ve worked closely with House Republican leadership on this timeline and look forward to seeing Speaker Johnson appoint a new chair to carry out the important mission of the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party,” he said in a statement.
Gallagher, who some had considered to be a rising star within the Republican Party, announced in February that he would not be running for re-election.
Now, in a bombshell announcement, he said he will not even be completing his current term.
Touting his achievements and positions while serving in Congress, Gallagher nonetheless is bailing out, leaving Republicans with a dangerously small majority.
“Four terms serving Northeast Wisconsin in Congress has been the honor of a lifetime and strengthened my conviction that America is the greatest country in the history of the world. I will forever be proud of the work I did on the Armed Services and Intelligence Committees, chairing the Cyberspace Solarium Commission, and chairing the Select Committee on the Chinese Community Party. It has truly been an honor to serve in the House of Representatives,” his statement reads.
