President Joe Biden is scheduled to be a guest on the “Jimmy Kimmel Live” show Wednesday, which will be his first in studio late-night show appearance since taking office.
Kimmel announced the news via Twitter on Sunday night. “Our very elected President @JoeBiden visits @JimmyKimmelLive Wednesday night. No malarkey,” the 54-year-old host shared.
This will be Biden’s first time going on “Kimmel” as president, but not his first chat with the late-night host. The former senator from Delaware also appeared on the show back in 2019 as he was trying to win the Democratic nomination.
Biden also appeared as a virtual guest on NBC’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” in December 2021.
Former President Barack Obama was a frequent late-night television guest, including multiple appearances on Kimmel’s program. Obama also made history as the first sitting president to appear on a late-night show when he went on “The Tonight Show” with Jay Leno in March 2009.
Per Fox News, the Wednesday episode of “Jimmy Kimmel” will be taped in front of a live studio audience at the El Capitan Entertainment Centre on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood.
After spending his weekend at the beach in Delaware, the president will be in Los Angeles this week along with his wife, First Lady Jill Biden, to host the Ninth Summit of the Americas. This event focuses on bringing together governments to “dramatically improve pandemic response and resilience, promote a green and equitable recovery, build strong and inclusive democracies, and address the root causes of irregular migration,” per the White House.
Biden’s appearance on Kimmel coincides with record-low approval ratings. The Daily Wire originally reported that an ABC News and Ipsos survey found that Biden’s approval rating on the national economic recovery is at 37% while his approval on the issue of inflation is just 28%.
This is becoming alarming for Biden and his party considering that those two issues are the top two concerns for voters, which analysts believe could indicate Democrats will suffer losses during midterm elections in November.
These numbers match with abysmal polling from other sources. Biden’s approval ratings on these issues lines up with recent polls that found the current president’s approval rating sank into the mid-30’s.
A Reuters poll conducted in late May found Biden’s overall approval rating stood at just 36%. Meanwhile, the results of Big Data Poll’s monthly Public Polling Project found Biden’s approval was at 37%. Last year, an Associated Press poll showed Biden with an approval rating of 63%, indicating that people believe things have gotten much worse, not better.
