Nebraska State Sen. Mike McDonnell (R-5) announced he is fleeing the Democrat party to become a Republican, giving the GOP what U.S. Sen. Pete Ricketts (R-NE) calls a “filibuster-proof majority” in Nebraska’s unicameral legislature.
McDonnell’s party change bears major implications for local and national politics as the state is on the verge of moving to a winner-take-all electoral vote allocation system for presidential elections.
The state currently has a split electoral vote awarding system that gives “two electoral votes to the state popular vote winner, and then one electoral vote to the popular vote winner in each congressional district,” as Newsweek’s Natalie Venegas pointed out.
The report explains that Nebraska Democrats censured McDonnell in March, after he voted with Republicans on transgender and abortion-related issues.
In his announcement on Wednesday, McDonnell explained that he registered as a Democrat in 1984. “I was a Christian, member of the Roman Catholic church, and I was proud of that. I was pro-life,” he said.
In 2016, he decided to run for state legislature, again as a pro-life Catholic Christian, pro-union, pro-Second Amendment.
But then, the Democrat Party turned on him, and punished him for his positions.
McDonnell said his grandfather always told him, “We’re Catholic, we’re Irish, and we’re Democrats.”
But McDonnell is through with the Democrats, announcing he will now be a registered Republican in the state of Nebraska.

Sen. Pete Ricketts (R-Neb.), the former governor of the state, said in a statement, “I am pleased to welcome Senator Mike McDonnell to the Republican Team. The extreme new Democrats are pushing common sense officials and voters to our party. The addition of Mike McDonnell to the Republican rolls in the legislature means for the first time in recent memory there is a filibuster proof Republican majority in the Unicameral.”

Efforts to change Nebraska to a winner-take-all electoral vote allocation system for presidential elections are still underway, led by Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.
ABC News reported:
Nebraska lawmakers are embroiled in a last-ditch, Republican-led effort, spurred on by Donald Trump and conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, to eliminate the state’s unique split-vote system for allocating three of its five Electoral College delegates just days before the end of the legislative session.
Such a change could have major implications for the outcome of the 2024 election.
The current system, which is also used by Maine, has been in place since 1991 and has faced multiple attempts to repeal it, coming just one vote short in 2016.
