Bodycam footage has emerged of a recently convicted Ohio mother who left her 16-month-old baby to die alone in a playpen of starvation while she scooted off to Puerto Rico on a pleasure trip.
As BizPac Review reported in July of last year, Kristel A. Candelario took a vacation to Puerto Rico and Detroit, leaving her daughter, baby Jailyn sitting in her playpen, surrounded by her own filth for 10 days. When Candelario returned, Jailyn was dead, weighing just 14 pounds.
Candelario pleaded guilty to aggravated murder and endangering children, and, on Monday, Judge Brendan Sheehan sentenced her to life in prison without the possibility of parole, KKTV reports.
“Prosecutors say upon discovering her daughter dead in the Pack-N-Play, Candelario redressed the young toddler before calling 911,” according to Law & Crime Network. “Portions of that phone call were played before the judge and in court, where Candelario can be heard screaming for help.”
The mother then returned to Detroit the following day to visit one of the men she had been dating.
“During her interview with investigators, Candelario claimed she had been home all week and her daughter hadn’t been eating well for the past few days,” Law & Crime continued. “She said she woke up that morning and found Jailyn unresponsive.”
Video of her interview with the police shows Candelario calmly sitting, her clasped hands in her lap.
When asked about Jailyn’s condition on Wednesday and Thursday, Candelario lied to the officers, stating, “She was refusing, maybe because she didn’t eat two days before.”
“But that’s why I was scared,” she told the officer, “because I say, oh my God we have to go to the hospital because she doesn’t eat anything.”

Jailyn, she said, sleeps “every day, 12 hours,” and, the night before her death, the mother said she fell asleep between 9 and 10 p.m.
“So, in this morning, I was sleeping too,” Candelario said. “I never wake up. She was out.”
“Last night, she was crying a lot,” she explained. “And I see one moment when I was take a shower, me, and she was screaming. I don’t know, probably she get in pain… or something like that.”
“‘I pick her up this morning and she look really, like dry,” Candelario said.
In sentencing her, Sheehan said, “As a court, I have to remember Jailyn, where you did not.”
“Just as how you didn’t let Jailyn out of her confinement until she died, so too, you should spend the rest of your life in a cell without freedom,” the judge stated. “The only difference will be that prison will at least feed you and give you liquids that you denied her.”
Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael C. O’Malley condemned Condelario’s “unimaginable selfishness.”
“Today, we remember Jailyn, a beautiful baby girl who was taken from this world due to her mother’s unimaginable selfishness,” O’Malley said, according to KKTV. “The thought of going on vacation for 10 days and leaving your child to starve to death in her Pack-N-Play is a new low in parental care.”
