Activists erupted in outrage last week over reports that police in Missouri shot an unarmed pregnant Black woman.
Yet as News Outlet contributor Grant Atkinson explained in a piece on Friday, the facts don’t support that narrative.
The controversy began on May 27 when Kansas City police officers wounded 26-year-old Leonna Hale after a vehicle that she was riding as a passenger in was pulled over on suspicion of being involved in an armed carjacking.
In response, a far-left website called the Kansas City Defender published an article that characterized the shooting as a “horrific, attempted execution” of an unarmed pregnant Black woman who had her hands up.
However, KMBC 9 reported on June 1 that Hale has since been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon, and a misdemeanor of resisting lawful detention.
That move was said to have come after police body camera footage was examined. It showed Hale pointing a firearm at police and refusing to drop it after being ordered to do so.
KMBC 9 went on to quote a statement from Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker in which he pushed back on claims that Hale’s shooting was unjustified.
“Some false narratives about what happened last Friday night at 6th and Prospect Avenue, unfortunately, were relied upon by some media and other sources,” Baker said.
“Our job, as prosecutors, is to remain neutral and review all evidence. Our review of body cam videos provided the actual accounting of events that night,” he continued.
“Our review of the investigation revealed the defendant, although she denied having a weapon at the time of the encounter with law enforcement officers, continually displayed a weapon during her encounter with police officers and also appeared to be attempting to flee,” the prosecutor explained.
