Dear Honourable Sir,
It was an honour and pleasure to meet you on May 28. Thank you so much for signing my copy of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which has now become a family heirloom, and taking some photos with myself and my daughter Leighton. Although she’s only 11 years old, I’m sure as she gets older, she’ll begin to appreciate the importance and significance of meeting you more and more, and rest assured as her father, I will be sure to remind her of that and explain more to her in due time. We printed a copy of the photo you took with her and she proudly showed it to her teacher upon her return to school. As I mentioned when we met, her grade 5 class at Pacific Academy in Surrey is currently studying the Charter so she was excited to share this with her. For a few moments that day, Leighton turned into the “teacher” and shared with her “student” some information that she wasn’t aware of.
On a personal note, as someone who’s immigrated to Canada, I am extremely grateful to be able to learn more about the country that is now my new home. To get a better understanding of one of Canadas sacred documents, the context and meaning behind the wording, and to be able to listen to your insights on the intentions that you and your fellow First Ministers had in its creation and some of the obstacles you faced are truly priceless. May the Good Lord continue to bless you with health and longevity as there is much that many of our fellow citizens can learn from you. I used to collect pens as a student so thought that it was fitting, as a simple token of appreciation, to gift you with one, as I felt it was somewhat symbolic of me becoming a student once again, researching and learning about Canada. I hope it is to your liking.
I’ve attached the photos that we took together and once again, please accept my enormous appreciation and thanks. I hope to see you again in one of your future events and if you can recommend where I would be able to keep up to date on your speeches or appearances, please let me know.
I continue to pray that God will bless you and all of us with the strength to endure these trying times and I am hopeful that despite all the difficulties and challenges, it can be put to good use somehow, for the benefit of the country and for HIs purpose.
Lastly, please extend my deep thanks to your lovely and gracious wife Carol. May the Almighty God bless you both always.
Sincerely,Anton Gonzales
