Speaker Pelosi announces raft of gun control legislation to undermine Second Amendment rights

Democrats wasted little time in exploiting the Uvalde, Texas, mass shooting at an elementary school to once again revive their longstanding goal of imposing stricter gun control laws on the American people.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is leading the charge in that regard, and she just announced this week a litany of different Democratic proposals that would fundamentally undermine the Second Amendment-protected right to keep and bear arms, according to a report from The Hill.

Yet, while Pelosi will likely succeed in getting these legislative measures passed through the Democrat-controlled House, few if any of those proposals will find sufficient support for passage in the evenly split Senate, and will likely only succeed in further endangering many already vulnerable incumbent Democrats in both chambers ahead of the November midterm elections.

The gun control agenda laid out at the anti-gun event

On Wednesday, Speaker Pelosi delivered remarks at an event with anti-gun activists in San Francisco, California, and gave a brief preview of some of the gun control bills that her Democratic caucus was currently considering.

That includes raising the minimum age from 18 to 21 to purchase any sort of firearm, restricting access to so-called “ghost guns” — privately made firearms that lack a serial number — banning so-called “high-capacity” ammunition magazines and bump stock attachments, a crackdown on gun trafficking and straw purchases, and mandatory “safe storage” requirements for gun owners.

Additionally, House Democrats will push legislation on Extreme Risk Protection Orders, better known as “red flag” laws, an Amber Alert-style system for active shooter incidents, and a renewed ban on so-called “assault weapons.”

“So we just are trying to — trying to hit in every possible way. Of course, we want the Senate to pass the background check legislation, which will save more lives than any of the initiatives we have,” Pelosi said.

“I tell you all of these because each one of them is a place where we can save lives. Each one of them is a place where we hope to have bipartisan support to get the job done,” she added. “Each one is a place where we wonder why is it take — why does it have to be this way? Why do they need so many magazines and assault weapon bans and everything to go hunting? What’s that all about?”

Anti-Second Amendment agenda reiterated in a letter to colleagues

Perhaps in recognition of the reality that extreme gun control proposals like these aren’t hugely popular in many parts of the country, including some places represented by Democrats, Speaker Pelosi issued a “Dear Colleague” letter Thursday to all members of the House Democratic caucus in an apparent effort to strengthen their resolve to vote in support of unpopular infringements of a constitutional right.

After outlining all of the proposals she had mentioned the day prior, and subtly conceding the unpopularity of certain measures, Pelosi wrote, “As we go down this path, it is our responsibility to keep gun violence front and center in the media so that, strengthened by public opinion, we can get life-saving legislation over the finish line.”

The Speaker ended with an unsubtle message aimed directly at members who may not support these pieces of gun control legislation, whether they be Democrats or Republicans or in the House or Senate.

“To all those in the Congress who would stand in the way of saving lives: your political survival is insignificant compared to the survival of our children. We will not rest until the job is done,” Pelosi concluded.
