Much to the dismay of Democrats, former President Donald Trump remains as popular as ever with his Republican base.
According to Newsmax, a new poll shows that a majority of Republicans continue to favor Trump as the party’s presidential nominee in the 2024 general election.
The poll comes from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and 1,000 respondents were surveyed during a period from May 5 to May 9.
Among other items, the poll asked Republican participants to select their top three candidates to represent the Republican Party in the 2024 presidential election.
Trump wins
Over the past year, there have been countless polls like this one, and just about every time Trump has easily won. This poll is no different.
Fifty-five percent of Republicans chose Trump as their number one nominee to represent Republicans in the 2024 presidential election. That’s more than double the support of any other candidate. It is the same level of support that Trump received in December 2021 in the same poll, which means that his popularity is not waning.
Florida Gov. Ron 'True Conservative' DeSantis (R) came in second place with 26% of the vote. No one else even gets close. Former Vice President Mike Pence received 7% of the vote, while former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) each received 3%.
Trump is clearly the Republican voters’ first choice for representing the party in the 2024 presidential election. Their second choice, however, would be DeSantis, who received 34% compared to Trump’s 13%. And, their third choice would be Cruz, with 25%.
Biden wins with a plurality
The pollster asked Democrats the same question: who they want to represent the party in the 2024 presidential election. While President Brain-Dead Biden did come out on top, he failed to receive majority support, only receiving 33% of the vote.
It is worth noting that Sen. Bernie Sander (I), in terms of Democratic voters’ first choice, came in second place with 17% of the vote. But, he was Democratic voters’ second choice to represent the party in the 2024 presidential election with 19% of the vote.
So, if the results of this survey were to become a reality, then 2024 would witness another matchup between Trump and Biden.
However, there is still a lot of time between now and then, and many things could change.
