Senator Rand Paul did another Rand Paul thing on Thursday. As Americans face an inflation crisis and a baby formula crisis at home, the Senate wanted to send another $40B to Ukraine via unanimous consent. It’s a fancy way of saying “without any debate.” According to Chuck Schumer, while Americans wait for problems to be dealt with at home, Ukraine doesn’t have a moment to wait for this $40B.
Senator Paul says they most certainly do and held up the unanimous consent with a *checks notes* responsible request and explanation of why.
“So, I act to modify the bill to allow for a special inspector general. This would be the inspector general that has been overseeing the waste in Afghanistan and has done a great job. So, I ask that the senator modify his request.”
That was Senator Paul’s request that Schmuck Schumer (and it sounds like Mitch McConnell) are boo-boo-faced about. Instead of rushing 40 billion dollars out the door, Paul has a reasonable request that could be taken care of in a day or two.
To be clear, Paul isn’t OPPOSED to the aid as it’s being reported on Twitter. But if we’re turning over more money, $40B dollars more, he wants someone to make sure the funds are being used properly. That’s reasonable. Even for Zelenskyy.
Senator Paul is also on the side of the American people. Maybe not the American people who answer the phone when public opinion pollsters call them asking questions. But Paul points out this bill would bring our total aid to $54 billion, and we have our own problems at home. “Itβs threatening our own national security, and itβs frankly a slap in the face to millions of taxpayers who are struggling to buy gas, groceries, and find baby formula.”
Now, the Senate needs to debate something on its merits, as opposed to sending tens of billions of more dollars out the door, no questions asked. Good.
