Former U.S. attorney general Eric Holder is pushing for the criminal indictment of former President Donald Trump, Breitbart News reports.
Holder made the push on Tuesday during an appearance on CNN’s The Lead. There he explained why he believes Trump ought to be indicted, and, as you probably have guessed by now, it has to do with the Capitol protest of January 6, 2021.
The same old narrative
The narrative that has been pushed by the left is that Trump incited an insurrection in an attempt to prevent the peaceful transition of power. Holder stuck with that narrative on Tuesday.
Yeah, I think given the breadth of what we already know, the depth of the criminality that we already know, and what I undoubtedly think we’re going to get from the January 6th Committee, and the danger to the republic, there was an attempt to stop the peaceful transfer of power, it seems to me there has to be accountability for that. Just as importantly, there has to be deterrence so people in the future will not try to do that which they tried to accomplish on January 6th.
Holder added that this is what has moved him “from thinking, it will be a divisive thing if [an indictment of Trump] happens, but it will be equally divisive, I think, not to take action against those who tried to foment that coup.”
The “possibility exists”
Fake News CNN Guest-anchor Dana Bash went on to ask Holder whether there is a possibility that Merrick Garland, the current attorney general, will indict Trump.
“I think that possibility exists,” Holder responded. “I have great faith in Merrick Garland.”
Bash then asked whether, if he were still attorney general, Holder would be indicting Trump.
“Well, I don’t have access to all of the information,” Holder responded, before adding that he believes the public record does support such an indictment.
“Right, to the extent that I was satisfied that the statutory requirements were met and that you could show the necessary intent, given the nature of this crime, yeah, I would proceed,” Holder concluded.
Will it happen?
Garland has been under tremendous pressure from the left to indict Trump, but so far he has decided against it. In March, when pressed on the issue, he said that “what we are avoiding is making decisions on a political basis, on a partisan basis.” But, he did leave the possibility open that Trump could be indicted.
The fact that Trump hasn’t been indicted, given how strongly the left has been pushing for such an indictment, would suggest that the Department of Justice can’t really find anything to hold him criminally responsible for. And, that’s because there is nothing.
