Republicans are gearing up for what could be an epic showdown for majority control of the Senate with several contentious elections around the country later this year.
Democrats control the U.S. Senate with a 51-49 majority, but Republicans are looking at a favorable Senate map in 2024, with Democrats defending 23 of the 34 seats up for grabs. Three of those seats are in red states former Donald Trump carried in 2020 — West Virginia, Montana and Ohio.
Five other seats, one of which is held by an independent, are in key swing states narrowly carried by President Biden in 2020 — Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
Below are the six Senate seats Republicans are trying to capture in 2024:
- Ohio – Currently held by Democrat Sen. Sherrod Brown, who is running for re-election. Three Republicans are running in the GOP primary in a bid to capture the seat.
- Montana – Currently held by Democrat Sen. Jon Tester, who is running for re-election. Former Navy SEAL Tim Sheehy is running in the GOP primary, along with four other Republicans, as they are all seeking to take Tester’s seat.
- West Virginia – Currently held by Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin, who is retiring. West Virginia Republican Gov. Jim Justice is running for the seat, and expected to win.
- Wisconsin – Currently held by Sen. Tammy Baldwin, who is running for re-election.  GOP businessman and real estate mogul Eric Hovde is going after Baldwin’s seat.
- Arizona – Currently held by Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, who switched from Democrat to Independent. She is not seeking re-election. Vying for her seat are Rep. Ruben Gallego, a Democrat who represents the state’s 3rd Congressional District, and Republican Kari Lake.
- Pennsylvania – Currently held by Democrat Sen. Bob Casey, who is running for re-election.  Republican Dave McCormick, a former hedge fund executive and Gulf War combat veteran is running to seize Casey’s Senate seat.
The report notes there are also two Republican seats which Democrats are trying to capture:
- Texas – Currently held by Republican Sen. Ted Cruz
- Florida – Currently held by Republican Sen. Rick Scott
