Fourteen Democrats aligned with 212 Republicans to pass a GOP-sponsored resolution criticizing President Biden’s immigration policies on Tuesday.
The resolution, spearheaded by Republican Representative Monica De La Cruz of Texas, who represents a border district, directly targeted Biden and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, accusing them of “creating the worst border security crisis in the Nation’s history.”
The vote occurred shortly after the newly established House Democrats’ task force on border security held its first press conference, advocating for bipartisan solutions to the ongoing crisis.
The task force particularly supports the consideration of the Senate’s bipartisan $118 billion border security and foreign aid package, despite criticism from Republicans in both the House and Senate.
The resolution’s passage sends a strong message to the Biden administration, coinciding with increased pressure from moderate Democrats urging the president to consider stricter border controls amid stalled Congressional negotiations on border security.
The 14 defectors, outlined by The Daily Wire, included Reps. Don Davis (D-NC), Jared Moskowitz (D-FL), Yadira Caraveo (D-CO), Angie Craig (D-MN), Henry Cuellar (D-TX), Sharice Davids (D-KS), Jared Golden (D-ME), Steven Horsford (D-NV), Greg Landsman (D-OH), Susie Lee (D-NV), Frank Mrvan (D-IN), Mary Peltola (D-AK), Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA), and Eric Sorensen (D-IL).
The resolution demands that Biden use executive authority to end “catch-and-release,” expedite migrant removals, and make reforms to the asylum system. However, Biden contends that congressional action is necessary for any meaningful reforms to take place.
Rep. Tom Suozzi of New York emphasized the need for Congressional action, stating, “to solve this problem, you need to have action by the United States Congress. And this group has come together to say, listen, we see this bipartisan bill in the Senate. It doesn’t do everything we want, but it will solve this problem. So, let’s do it. Let’s move forward.”
Despite President Biden backing a bipartisan Senate bill last month with extensive border security reforms, negotiations have slowed down, leading to a legislative standstill in the House, including government funding measures.
Border security remains a crucial issue for voters in 2024, as public opinion polls indicate. Many swing-district members on both sides of the aisle are urging their parties to find a solution on border security.
House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana, who has focused on the border crisis and immigration since assuming leadership of the House GOP Conference in October, led more than 60 Republicans to the U.S.-Mexico border earlier this year to draw attention to the issue.
In February, Johnson guided the House through a historic vote to impeach Secretary Mayorkas, marking the first impeachment of a Cabinet secretary by the U.S. Congress since 1876.
