American-born Cardinal Robert Prevost has been selected as the next Pope, a total surprise. Prevost is an American Catholic cardinal born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago. He is a member of the Order of Saint Augustine (OSA) and was ordained a priest in 1982. He has spent much of his career in Peru, serving as a missionary, parish pastor.
Prevost is the first American pontiff in the 2,000-year history of the Catholic Church.
Papal name Leo XIV.

there has long been a taboo against a U.S. pope, given the geopolitical power already wielded by the United States in the secular sphere. But Prevost, a Chicago native, could be a first because he’s also a Peruvian citizen and lived for years in Peru, first as a missionary and then as an archbishop.
