Peter had vowed that even if every other disciple abandoned Jesus, he would remain steadfast until the end. In fulfillment of Jesus’ words, Peter indeed denied Him three times, as recorded in Matthew 26:33-35. Peter had encountered the risen Lord in Jerusalem on two separate occasions. At this moment in John’s Gospel, Peter found himself back at the fishing nets. Keep in mind that when Jesus summoned him, He declared that from that moment forward, he would be catching men (Matthew 4:19).
A man from the shore inquired if they had been successful in their fishing efforts. Then, a similar event unfolded as when Jesus first invited Peter to become His disciple (Luke 5:5-7). As the nets were filled once more in a miraculous way, Peter recognized the figure on the shore as Jesus and eagerly swam to Him. With great compassion, Jesus brought Peter back into the fold and urged him to nurture God’s flock. Peter was growing in his understanding of the profound nature of divine grace.
As Peter and Jesus strolled by the shores of Galilee, Jesus revealed to Peter that he would one day face crucifixion for his unwavering dedication to Him. That surely brought comfort to Peter, knowing that divine support would sustain him in his faithfulness until the end. It is natural to question our own strengths, yet we must always have faith in God’s power to uphold us and prevent us from stumbling (Jude 1:24). Then Jesus called upon Peter once more. When a mentor selects a student, they often invite them with the words, “Come, walk with me!” Three years prior, Peter had responded to that divine call. The initial occasion when Jesus filled the nets left Peter questioning his own capacity to follow Him (Luke 5:8). However, by the subsequent instance of the nets overflowing, Peter began to understand that it wasn’t centered on his own strength. It was about the completeness of the Divine.
Reflect on this: Have you received a new calling?
John 21:19
19 (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, “Follow me.”
