Could Donald Trump’s spiritual journey be reshaping his presidential vision? Newt Gingrich recently revealed that the president has experienced a profound religious awakening after surviving two assassination attempts, and that he believes he knows why God saved his life.
At a glance:
• Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich claimed this week that President Trump’s faith has deepened after surviving two assassination attempts
• Trump reportedly believes God saved his life for a divine purpose to lead America again
• Gingrich compares Trump’s transformation to Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul II, who both survived assassination attempts
• House Speaker Mike Johnson prayed with Trump after the second attempt, reinforcing his religious conviction
• Trump promised to make America “more religious” in an Easter message, appealing to his strong conservative Christian base
Trump’s Life-Changing Moment
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has revealed that President Donald Trump underwent a significant spiritual transformation following two assassination attempts during his 2024 campaign. The first attempt occurred in Butler, Pennsylvania last July, while the second happened in September as Trump was golfing in West Palm Beach, Florida.
According to Gingrich, who made the comments during a Fox News interview, Trump now believes divine intervention saved his life when he narrowly escaped death by moving his head at the precise moment needed to avoid a fatal shot.
“I think that’s true, but I’d also point out when he really understood that it was providential that he moved his head at the only possible second to avoid being killed and then realized about a month later somebody else tried to kill him,” Gingrich explained.
A New Religious Conviction
The former Speaker suggested that these near-death experiences have given Trump a deeper sense of purpose and religious conviction. Gingrich revealed that House Speaker Mike Johnson prayed with Trump after the second assassination attempt, further strengthening the president’s faith journey.

“I know from talking to Speaker Johnson, who prayed with him after that second event, I think Trump is probably profoundly more religious today than he was before he went to Butler, Pennsylvania, because it’s personal,” Gingrich stated. The former House Speaker drew parallels between Trump’s experience and those of other world leaders who survived assassination attempts.

“He said this, sort of, in his inaugural address, that God had spared him for a purpose, and you’ll remember both President Reagan and Pope John Paul the Second had been shot, both thought and compared notes that they had been spared by God for a purpose,” Gingrich noted. This divine purpose, according to Gingrich, is tied directly to Trump’s mission to “make America great again.”
Making America Religious Again
Trump’s spiritual awakening appears to align with his public statements about faith in America. On Easter morning, President Trump posted a message on Truth Social promising to make the United States “more religious” than ever before, connecting his faith to his political vision.
Trump’s religious message continues to resonate with his base of evangelical Christians and conservative Catholics. A Pew Research Center poll from September 2024 showed strong support for Trump among white evangelical Protestants, White Catholics, and White non-evangelical Protestants.
